Copy Right!Do you know what you can copy? How about that article? That video? That software? In an era of exploding technology and information, it's getting harder and harder to know what you can and cannot do. Students are, for the most part, unaware; teachers are often uncertain.

To help teachers and students, the Canadian Foundation for Economic Education, in partnership with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office of the federal government, the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN), and the Canadian Copyright Licensing Agency (CANCOPY), has produced a teaching kit for use in grades 7, 8 and 9. The kit comprises an 80-page Teacher's Guide and two videos.

The four-part video produced specifically for this kit portrays a number of young people confronting issues, questions, and scenarios that relate to copyright. A second video, produced by the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA), focuses on the recording industry, careers within the industry, and the relevance of copyright to those in the industry.

The Teacher's Guide includes a section entitled "Background for Teachers," which provides detailed copyright information that is of interest and concern to educators. The Guide also presents step-by-step implementation strategies for teaching students about copyright.
