Eco-Detectives: Teaching about the Economics of the Economy
This nine-lesson curriculum is designed to help teachers and students learn how to apply economic reasoning to environmental issues. Sponsored by the Donner Canadian Foundation, Eco-Detectives introduces four Principles of Eco-Detection:
- People's choices influence the environment.
- People's choices have unintended results.
- People's choices are influenced by the potential benefits and costs of each alternative.
- People tend to take better care of things for which they feel a sense of ownership and to which they assign value.
Each lesson presents background information, an eco-mystery that encourages the application of the above Principles, a list of concepts, instructional objectives, visuals and student handouts, discussion questions with suggested answers, a closure activity that provides a summary or suggests additional applications, and suggestions for assessment.
