Econ and Me was developed to introduce basic economic concepts to students in grades 3 to 5. The series includes five 15-minute student video programs, one for each of the five economic concepts covered: scarcity, opportunity cost, consumption, production, and interdependence. The programs utilize basic economic terms in a straightforward yet engaging approach, drawing on real-life experiences common to most students. The concepts are drawn together through animated summaries and community sequences that apply real-world examples of economic understandings to individuals, families, and communities.
Two 20- to 25-minute teacher video programs provide an overview of the programs, summarize the content of the student videos, consider teaching strategies, and illustrate how these programs, along with the 84-page Teacher's Guide, can be used most effectively. They also demonstrate ways to reinforce basic skills in language arts, mathematics, and problem solving and include actual sequences of teachers using suggested activities, techniques, and strategies.
