Produced in co-operation with the National Film Board and the Kativik School Board, Economix is an innovative and exciting eight-part video series on basic economics designed to capture and hold the attention of senior secondary students. The series employs a fast-paced style that integrates a creative collage of visual images with youth-oriented sound and an entertaining voice-over.
The series comes on four videocassettes, each containing two programs with a running time of approximately 20 minutes each. The program titles and major concepts covered are as follows:
- Needs and Wants (Major concepts: Needs and wants, goods and services, types of resources, trade, barter, money)
- The Market (Major concepts: Supply and demand, buyers and sellers, revenue and profit, market competition, prices, a marketplace, money)
- Production (Major concepts: Private and public enterprises, multinationals, entrepreneurs, co-operatives, productivity, profits and costs)
- Consumption (Major concepts: Consumer decisions, income, choices, trade-offs, advertising, credit, budgeting, consumer protection)
- The Banking System (Major concepts: Saving and borrowing, banks and credit unions, trust companies, interest rates, inflation, bank loans, bank deposits)
- The Role of Government (Major concepts: Government programs and services, economic stability, economic cycles, fiscal policies, expansion, recession, debt)
- International Trade (Major concepts: Specialisation, comparative advantage, international competition, trade barriers, tariffs, quotas, free trade)
- Tomorrow's Challenges (Major concepts: Government action, public opinion and attitudes, education training, technology, public debt)
