Labour: Markets, Laws, and Unions

Money and YouthThis resource is intended to help students learn about such topics as:

  • the role of labour in the Canadian economy,
  • how labour markets work,
  • types of labour organizations,
  • how unions are formed,
  • the collective bargaining process,
  • ways labour/management disputes may be resolved,
  • the rights of workers,
  • the impact of unions, and
  • the challenges facing unions.

Students will undertake a wide variety of activities designed to help them develop thinking or inquiry skills as well as understanding of a concept or reality. Throughout the resource, a recurring case study based on the story of the growth of the National Hockey League Players' Association illustrates and further develops themes. Students also review real-life disputes and are invited to "be the judge."

The Teacher's Guide contains all the material in the student resource plus further information about the activities, suggested answers, teaching strategies, and additional material to expand the activities. The Guide is posted on the Members' section of our web site where it can be downloaded in whole or in part for free.
